We will probably not have a difficult task today trying to convince you to eat watermelon! Fresh, delicious and so summery: it is loved by all (or almost)…

But did you know how much this fruit (which is in the same family as cucumbers and squash, and from the botanical point of view it is closer to a vegetable) is also good for your health?

Here are some reasons to start eating watermelon, even more through summer, as well as an amazing recipe.

1. It is rich in antioxidants

Like tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, watermelon contains lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Researchers have already established that this substance has a protective effect against prostate cancer. Research continues on other common cancers.

2. It is good for your heart

Watermelon contains beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. All these nutrients are known to promote good blood pressure and a good level of blood cholesterol.

3. It is excellent for hydration

Being 92% water, it’s almost as refreshing to eat a slice of melon as it is drinking a glass of water! And when it’s really hot, any source of hydration counts. Especially in the case of children, who during a heat wave may refuse to drink enough but rarely refuse watermelon!

4. It improves mental health

Watermelon also contains a large amount of vitamin B6. This vitamin acts on our brain, reducing the symptoms of stress and anxiety. It could, in some cases, even prevent panic attacks.

5. It is great for your libido

Watermelon contains an amino acid called citrulline, which is used to synthesize another amino acid extremely important to our body: arginine. Arginine plays a role in the normal division of cells, healing, elimination of ammonia, and… is a natural form of Viagra! Indeed, arginine relaxes the blood vessels, just like this known medicine.
